To John Norwood:
I am writing to let you know that Hache has done no work for me that he should have been paid for, except repairing the little house above the hall windows, part of which fell down, which was his fault. And as for the work he did there, that was part of a contract involving building two chimneys for Sir Thomas Howes for 40 shillings, and that contract may not hold, because I need three chimneys built elsewhere.
Also the said little house does not amount to five thousand tiles, which at 16 pence the thousand should amount to six shillings and eight pence. Nevertheless if Sir Thomas thinks he should be allowed more, he shall be. And you must remember he received six shillings and eight pence from you, and eight shillings from Robert Tolle before All Saints Day, as is stated in his account. And he has received since All Saints Day five shillings and eight pence from Tolle. By this reckoning he should be 13 shillings and four pence ahead, which I would like you to collect through this work in any way you can, for I do not owe him any favours.
Also, be careful that you leave no furze bushes in the dyke that you are repairing, and make sure that the wood from them is made into firewood and set aside immediately, ready to be taken away. I would like you to here on Saturday evening, even if you have to leave again on Monday.
